Letter from the Church Council
Attending Arusha Community Church every Sunday can easily become a habit—just something we do because we are used to it. As I write this on a Sunday night, I reflect on a Sunday that was anything but routine. My parents were visiting, and bringing someone new to church is not only meaningful for them, but it also gives you the opportunity to experience the service through their eyes. It is always enlightening to gain a fresh perspective.
Today, I was filled with gratitude for what I saw through their eyes: the diversity and unity, the worship, the message, and the joy that filled the building and my heart. As we talked on the way home, my parents shared that they, too, were inspired. Despite the language barriers and their very different congregational background, they felt welcomed and experienced the unity in Christ. In the past few years, my faith had become largely intellectual. I chose to follow Christ, partly due to spiritual experiences in my teenage years and partly because I was convinced that following His example is beneficial for everyone. At times, I even told myself that even if it were not true, living by His example would still be worthwhile; it wouldn’t hurt.
I realize now that I could have drifted too far into a purely rational approach, but thankfully, I am surrounded by friends and family who have encouraged me, keeping the fire of faith alive. Being part of ACC, and especially becoming more involved in the community, has sparked a small revival in my personal faith. This faith still needs to be strengthened—the fire needs fuel, and there will be struggles. Yet, feeling part of the body of Christ here in Arusha, and having the opportunity to share that with my parents this morning, has given me the fuel I need for the coming week. As we sang today: This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. And together, all our little lights— spread across the globe—will illuminate the world! I pray that our community in Christ at ACC gives you the spark you need to let your light shine, for everyone to see.
